The first thing that stands out when you see the old Papadimitriou Hospital is how difficult it is to imagine it as a working hospital. The former 1st IKA Treatment Centre in Melissia was once a major medical facility, with doctors, nurses, patients and all the activity that comes with a functioning hospital. Today, it sits empty and slowly falls apart.
From the outside, there are still signs of what the place once was, but they are being covered by something new. Graffiti spreads across the walls, while plants have started growing through and around the buildings. At one of the entrances, nature has almost completely taken over, creating a strange contrast between the hard concrete of the hospital and the life growing around it.
Walking around the outside, the feeling is less about a building simply being abandoned and more about watching it slowly become something else. The hospital is no longer what it was, but it hasn't disappeared either. It has become a space shaped by time, nature and graffiti — a place where the traces of its past are still visible, even as they slowly disappear.
